How do I get my business on Google?

Want people nearby to find your business on Google? I'm a web designer in Crewe, and this is where I'd start: your free Business Profile, followed by your website.

The short answer

Start with a free Google Business Profile and complete verification. Add your website link and make sure the site explains what you do and where you work. Ask customers for an honest review, not just those you expect to leave positive feedback.

Step 1: Set up a free Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile is your listing on Google Maps and in local search results. Google says creating one and listing your business is free. You add your business name, phone number, website, opening hours, services and photos, then verify that you run the business.

If you go to your customers rather than them coming to you, Google lets service-area businesses hide their address and show the areas they cover instead. Most trades should do this, especially if you work from home.

Step 2: Pick the right category

Your main category tells Google what you are, so choose the closest match, like "Plumber", "Electrician" or "Roofing contractor". Check that the category describes your main service, rather than choosing one that only loosely fits.

Step 3: Have a website that says what you do and where

Google needs to read your services and towns somewhere. Your website should have a page title and description that mention your trade and area, list your services and the towns you cover, load quickly and work properly on a phone. Link it from your Business Profile.

Step 4: Get reviews from real customers

Ask customers for an honest review after each job. Send a direct link to your review page so they can find it easily. Reply to reviews too, but keep customer details private.

Step 5: Keep your details the same everywhere

Use exactly the same business name, phone number and website on Google, Facebook, directories and your van. Matching details help Google trust that it's all the same business.

Step 6: Tell Google about your website

Google Search Console is a free tool that shows how your site appears in Google. Add your site, submit your sitemap, and ask Google to index your main pages. New sites can take a few weeks to start showing.

Can someone set this up for me?

Yes. Every website I build is set up for Google, with clear titles, your services and areas, and fast loading, and I'll help you link your Google Business Profile to it.
