The short answer
If you're fully booked from word of mouth, you can manage without one for now. But a website is the one place online you fully control. It shows up when people search Google, makes you look established, and lets customers call you in one tap, without competing with other trades on the same page.
Why isn't a Facebook page enough?
A Facebook page is great for showing recent jobs and staying in touch with locals. But plenty of people never look on Facebook when they need a tradesperson. They search Google for something like "plumber Crewe", and Facebook pages don't show up there as reliably as a proper website does.
You also don't control Facebook. Its rules, layout and who sees your posts can change at any time.
What about directory sites?
Directories and job sites can bring in work, and many trades use them alongside a website. The difference is that on a directory you're listed next to your competitors, on their terms. Your own website is just you: your work, your reviews, your number.
What does a website do that the others don't?
- Shows up in Google searches for your trade and your town
- Makes you look established and trustworthy to people who don't know you yet
- Lets customers call or WhatsApp you in one tap
- Shows your qualifications, like Gas Safe or NICEIC, in one place
- Gives your Google Business Profile somewhere to link to
- Belongs to you, whatever happens to social media or directory sites
When might you not need one yet?
If you're booked up for months from word of mouth and don't want more work, a website can wait. It's still worth setting up a free Google Business Profile so people searching for you can find your number.
Most trades get to a point where they want steadier work, better jobs or to raise their prices. That's when a website earns its keep.
How do I get a website without the hassle?
You can use a website builder or ask someone to build it for you. I offer web design in Cheshire and work with trades across the UK too. Tell me about your business and I'll build a free demo for you to try on your phone.
Questions
Do customers really check websites before hiring a tradesperson?
Many people look you up before they call, especially if they found you through a recommendation or a search. A clear website with your reviews and qualifications helps them pick up the phone.
Is a Google Business Profile the same as a website?
No. A Google Business Profile is your free listing on Google Maps and search. It works best alongside a website, which it can link to.
Can I have a website and still use Facebook?
Yes, and you should. Use Facebook for updates and photos of recent jobs, and link it to your website.
